Michigan EventFriday, February 3rd - Michigan SOGI Education Conference   8:30 am - 3:30 pm. Michigan's first state-wide conference on sexual orientation and gender indentity (SOGI) issues in education will be held at Oakland University in Rochester. The conferece objectives are to promote dialogue about important issues involving sexual orientation and gender identity in schools and universities; provide staff, teachers and administrators with opportunities to inform and influence how colleges of education are preparing teachers and administrators to effectively addresss these areas of difference; and to identify ways that colleges of education and community-based resources can assist practitioners in effectively meeting the needs of their LGBT students, staff, faculty and administrators. Local eventSaturday, February 4th - Antiques Roadshow-Style Appraise-a-thon   10:00 am to 3:00 pm. Saginaw Art Museum, 1126 N. Michigan Ave. Presented by Adomaitis Antiques. Verbal fair market estimates are $5 per item for non-members and $4 for SAM members. No books, coins, stamps or weapons.

Tuesday, February 7th - National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day   Two Saginaw organizations are shining a light on the HIV/AIDS epidemic in the African-American community throughout the month of February. Sacred Heart Rehabilitation Center’s HIV/AIDS Care Program and the NAACP Saginaw Branch, both located at 301 East Genesee in Saginaw, are stressing the message to "get educated, get tested, and get treatment when it comes to HIV/AIDS." Perceptions Event Saturday, February 11th - Valentines Dance  Beginning at 7:00 pm. The Alderton, 301 Cass St., Saginaw. We will serve desserts, snacks and light refreshments so you are encouraged to make a night of it and visit one of the eateries in the surrounding area beforehand. Meeting at Magic Bean Café, 5789 State Street, Saginaw, the group offers an informal gathering, taking a more 'light-hearted' approach to allow transgenders in the Tri-City area an opportunity to connect with one another for socializing and support. Local event Friday, March 2nd - POP-U-Larity   7:00 pm. A comedic mockumentary about finding your 15 minutes of fame. Written and produced by J. C. (John) Peterson, former Essexville resident, and Michelle Ehlen. $5 per person. State Theatre, 913 Washington Ave., Bay City. Note: In 2003, John Peterson co-edited "A Face in the Crow: Expressions of Gay Life in America" with Martin Bedogne in partnership with Judy Shepard to support the educational mission of the Matthew Shepard Foundation.

Michigan EventSaturday, March 10th - ComedyFest   8:00 pm. Equality Michigan's 16th Annual ComedyFest is a fabulous event for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and allied communities. This is an annual benefit for Equality Michigan, which works to achieve full equality and respect for all people in Michigan regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression. Comedians: Chantal Carrere, Los Angeles; Erin Foley, Los Angeles; Chris Doucette, New York; and Diane Amos, San Francisco. Ford Community & Performing Arts Center, Dearborn. Standard ticket is $35. One show only.

Local event April 13th to 15th - The Laramie Project   Dramatic, real-life narrative of the small town of Laramie, Wyoming, during the aftermath of the brutal murder of gay University of Wyoming student Matthew Shepard. The Laramie Project is a breathtaking theatrical collage that explores the depth to which humanity can sink and the heights of compassion of which we are capable. Each performance will have a Talk Back by the director, actors, and members of the GLAD Network from Dow. Midland Center for the Arts, Little Theatre. 8:00 pm on Fri. & Sat., 3:00 pm on Sun. Tickets $19 adult / $11 student.

National Event Thursday, November 15th - Gay American Smoke Out   The Gay American Smoke Out is an opportunity for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgendered (LGBT) individuals to challenge themselves to quit smoking. The Gay American Smoke Out was first introduced in 1994 by the Billy DeFrank Lesbian and Gay Community Center. Typically held on the 3rd Thursday in November, The "Gay American Smoke Out" was created to coincide with the American Cancer Society's "Great American Smokeout."

National EventTuesday, November 20th - Transgender Day of Remembrance   2012 marks the 14th Annual Transgender Day of Remembrance. The day was set aside to memorialize those who were killed due to anti-transgender hatred or prejudice. The Day of Remembrance is held in November to honor Rita Hester, whose murder in 1998 kicked off the "Remembering Our Dead" web project and a San Francisco candlelight vigil in 1999.

Ongoing Programs:

Freeland Meet & Greet - 2nd Wednesday of every month. Riverside Restaurant, 8295 Midland Rd. Private Room. The Riverside is famous for their homemade pies. Winter hours are 6:00 - 8:00 pm.

Friday Night Dinner. Join Perceptions members on Friday nights for dinner at a local eatery. Each week we meet at a different restaurant for food, fun and conversation. The Perceptions Transgender Group meets at 6:00 pm on the last Mondayday of each month Magic Bean Cafe, 5789 State St., Saginaw. The group offers an informal gathering, taking a more 'light-hearted' approach to allow transgenders in the Tri-City area an opportunity to connect with one another for socializing and support.
